About retail franchises
Retail franchises cover stores that sell products rather than services: supermarkets and grocery, apparel and footwear, mobile and electronics, jewellery and accessories, home furnishing, stationery and books, and pharmacy. In most of them the franchisee owns the stock, so a large part of the investment sits on the shelves rather than in the fit-out.
Retail lives on footfall, how fast stock turns and the margin the brand leaves you on each product. The question to settle early is who carries the risk of unsold stock: some brands take back slow-moving or seasonal goods, others leave it with you.
Check these before you compare brands
- Whether stock is bought outright, supplied on credit or placed on consignment, and what happens to unsold or seasonal goods.
- The margin on each product line, and whether the brand also sells the same products online into your area.
- For regulated formats such as pharmacy, the licence and qualified staff your state requires, and whether the brand helps obtain them.
