Preschool franchise in India: cost, setup and what to check

A preschool franchise is a play school or early-learning centre run under a brand's name, curriculum and training. You lease and fit out the premises, hire and keep the teachers, and fill the seats; the brand supplies the curriculum, teacher training, admission support and its reputation with parents. The total cost depends far more on your premises than on the franchise fee, so price the site before you compare brands.

  • Premises, fit-out, child safety and the first year of salaries make up most of the cost, not the franchise fee.
  • Enrolment is mostly decided once a year at admission time, so fund a full academic year of running costs.
  • Ask for the per-child fee the brand charges you and the enrolment the payback assumes.

How preschool franchises are offered

Brands sell the same idea in a few shapes. Which one you are being offered changes who carries the risk.

Standalone play school
Your own centre on a leased ground floor or independent building, open for the morning school session. The most common model and the one most brands quote their investment for.
Preschool with daycare
The same centre kept open through the afternoon for working parents. More revenue per child, but longer staff hours, meals and a stricter safety burden.
Shop-in-school or campus model
A branded preschool section inside an existing school, run by the school with the brand's curriculum. Lower premises cost; the school's own reputation carries the admissions.
Curriculum licence only
No name on the board, only the brand's curriculum, kits and training. Cheapest, but you build parent trust yourself.

What the investment is made of

This is what the investment a preschool brand quotes is made of. Get a written figure for each line from the brand and from local quotes; no two sites cost the same.

CostWhat it covers
Franchise feeOne-time, for the brand name, territory and initial training.
PremisesSecurity deposit and rent for a ground-floor space with outdoor play area. Usually the largest number on the sheet, and it recurs.
Fit-out and safetyChild-safe flooring, rounded furniture, toilets at child height, CCTV, fire safety and the brand's interior specification.
Learning kits and play equipmentBought from the brand or its approved supplier. Ask whether you can source locally and what the brand's mark-up is.
Staff before openingTeachers and helpers are hired and trained before the first child arrives, so you pay salaries before you collect fees.
Launch marketingPre-admission events, local advertising and signage for the first admission season.
Working capitalEnough to cover rent and salaries for the months between opening and a full classroom.

We do not publish market price ranges. The listings above carry each brand's own published investment and fee.

How the money comes back

A preschool earns from the children enrolled, so every number follows the enrolment you can realistically fill in your catchment.

  • Admission or annual fee collected at the start of the year, and monthly or term tuition fees after that.
  • Daycare, transport or activity fees if you run them.
  • Out of that: the brand's recurring fee (often per child per year, sometimes a share of fees), rent, salaries, kits and utilities.
  • Model it at the enrolment you can fill in year one, not at the centre's capacity, and put the result into the payback calculator.

Questions to ask the brand before you sign

  1. What exactly does the quoted investment include, and what is left for me to pay?
  2. Is the recurring fee charged per child, as a share of fees, or both? What is it at 20, 40 and 60 children?
  3. Which kits and uniforms must I buy from the brand, and at what price?
  4. Can I speak to two franchisees who opened in the last two years, chosen by me?
  5. Which registrations and safety approvals does my state require, and will the brand help with them?
  6. What happens to my centre if I want to exit or the brand changes its curriculum?

Preschool franchise: common questions

+How much does a preschool franchise cost in India?

It depends mostly on the premises in your city — rent, deposit, fit-out and safety work — and only partly on the brand's fee. We do not publish typical prices; the preschool brands listed on this page show their own published starting investment and fee.

+Is a preschool franchise profitable?

It can be once enrolment is close to capacity, but enrolment is mostly decided once a year at admission time while rent and salaries run every month. The first year is usually the hardest. Work it out at the enrolment you can realistically fill, using your own rent and salary quotes in the payback calculator.

+What space does a play school need?

A ground-floor space with natural light, child-height toilets and an outdoor or open play area, in a residential catchment parents can reach easily. The brand will have its own minimum; ask for its site checklist before you sign a lease.

+Do I need a teaching qualification to run a preschool franchise?

Brands rarely require the owner to be a teacher, but they do require trained teachers and will usually train your staff themselves. What they look for in an owner is time on site, local reputation and the ability to fund the first year.

+Can I run a preschool from home?

Some brands allow a residential ground floor, but child safety, parking and local rules on running an institution from a residence decide whether it is practical. Check both the brand's site rules and your local authority before investing in fit-out.
